BACKSTORY

It was Lee's performance in "All Expenses Paid" that won her the role of Betty Lou Fleckum in Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd.

"Elia Kazan watched a television play in which I danced the samba," Lee explained. "The girl I played was a bit tight, and she danced too much – overdid it. Kazan saw something in that which seemed right to him for the character of the drum majorette in A Face in the Crowd."
