DISCOVERED AT SARDI'S

"As we were leaving [Sardi's], [my mother] introduced me to Mary Orr and
Reginald Denham. They said they had a new play and asked if I could act.
I said, 'Yes,' figuring I'll learn how later. They asked me to read - and that's
how it came to pass."

"So I had my first reading in a theater. It was the most frightening and
exhilarating thing in the world. There I was, onstage, all alone, under a
bright light, with blackness out front, and the sound of voices."

"I read what they handed me . . . From out front, I heard laughs. I loved the
sound. I loved the smell of the whole thing. I loved the whole idea of getting
up and saying words written by someone else."

"The play was called Be Your Age and I thought that it was the most brilliant
play ever written. The critics didn't agree with me. It closed after one week."
